What is Jimdo?

Jimdo is a website builder and domain registry company based out in Germany. Since its founding in 2007, it has offered a drag-and-drop website editor to its users.

The editor is useful and comes in handy for those who have coding and technical skills. Since it started looking into artificial intelligence, it has another builder that’s useful for those with no coding or technical experience.

Jimdo’s mission has t been to help the self-employed and small businesses thrive in today’s economy. They’re aware that small businesses are the center of a healthy economy. Today, it powers close to 20 million websites.

If you’re in a hurry, here’s a brief video on what Jimdo is all about. Also, I provided a list of pros and cons to consider as well.

Jimdo- The Easiest Way To Create A Website Or Online Shop!

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Free plan (for both Jimdo Dolphin & Jimdo Creator)
  • Editor simple to use and navigate
  • Unlimited storage space (only for a business plan or higher)
  • Optimized for mobile devices
  • “No commission fee” policy

Cons

  • More focused on the European market than in the United States
  • Customer support is limited and slow (i.e. no phone support or live chat; wait times may be up to 1-2 business days)
  • Limited customization tools for the ADI editor
  • Not the best for SEO
  • Ecommerce tools are not the most advanced as other eCommerce platforms

What does Jimdo provide for users?

As mentioned earlier, Jimdo offers two types of builders to try out. They include the following:

Jimdo Dolphin

  • Uses an artificial design intelligence (ADI) builder to design a website
  • Asks users to answer a series of questions based on personal or business needs
  • Best for: People who have basic computer skills, complete beginners in building websites; or people who don’t have a lot of time to code or design

Jimdo Creator

  • The original drag and drop builder that Jimdo started out with
  • Best for: People who have coding experience, or basic website design; freelancers; independent contractors who create websites for multiple clients

How does Jimdo work?

To be more specific, let’s go over how it works using the Jimdo Dolphin option. This one is the most popular and easiest to use for beginners.

Once you sign up for Jimdo Dolphin, you’ll be asked a series of questions, including:

  • What is the website for? (i.e. personal page, local event, or a business)
  • What are your website goals? (i.e. to get traffic, make sales)
  • What styles and colors do you prefer for the website?
  • What pages would you like to add?
Jimdo website creator: The design editor makes it easy to edit color and font sizes.

Jimdo Dolphin allows you to create a basic website, along with an online store. Both options are great to use: Once you take the time to look over the basic functions, it’s easy to use and navigate through.

Design editor

The designs are very modern when making a website, which helps make pages stand out. With the editor, you have a couple of options to add buttons and create different animations.

Jimdo website creator: Jimdo has a simple design editor to navigate through- to create animations.

Block design

This feature allows you to work on page design, especially when it comes to adding or deleting blocks. Block designs allow you to customize the background in order to make it look more appealing.

It’s easier to add or delete blocks of content, especially when you need to make changes. Also, you can add specific pages, such as a contact form or newsletter signup for your website.

Jimdo website creator: You can edit any type of page or image with Jimdo's block design.

Ecommerce

By signing up to build an online store, you’ll have access to a professional domain (if you choose to upgrade to a paid plan). With an online store, you can add product galleries and add payment methods, such as PayPal and Visa.

One of the best eCommerce features available is it has a “No commission fee” policy. In other words, when you make a sale, you don’t pay any fees (not even a dime!). So you get to keep 100% of the revenue you earned.

What happens when you take a pay cut? What you need to focus on is increasing your human capital.

Promote your products on social media

Jimdo has a feature where you can integrate your website or store into social media networks. As part of its partnership with Facebook, Jimdo makes selling on the social network much easier.

With a Jimdo account, you can easily set up a store through Facebook Marketplace (for selling items online and locally). This option also applies through a store on Instagram.

  • Note: This feature is available only for some of their paid plans. For more information, check out the pricing section later in the review.

Who is Jimdo best for?

For small businesses looking for a simple online presence, Jimdo is a great choice. A good example would be owning a coffee shop or mom-and-pop store.

With a local business, you can use a Jimdo website for advertising your products (rather than selling directly online).

With that option, you can display items you have available at your location. Or, if you want to provide general information about your business (i.e. contact information, hours of operations).

If you have some coding or web design experience, you would do very well with Jimdo Creator. Being the original product, this builder has a lot more customization and control when building out a website.

It’s not the best choice for building a large eCommerce store. The features are not that advanced enough to build a full-scale store.

Pricing

Jimdo offers a few options to help users build a website or online store. They offer a free plan if you don’t want to invest in services right now.

With one of their paid plans, you can get a free custom domain for one year, social media integrations, and personalized support.

If you choose to go with an annual plan, you can save up to 30%. They do have options to sign up for either a one-year or two-year plan- if you were to make a long-term commitment.

Here are the options for building a website with Jimdo Dolphin:

Starter Plan ($10/month)Grow Plan ($15/month)Business Plan ($20/month)VIP ($30/month)
-Personal Website-Business Website-Professional Online Store-Complete toolbox for success
Prices Accurate As of August 2022

If you’re not satisfied with what you get from the website builder, all plans come with a 14-day money-back guarantee. That applies if you wanted to get a full refund; after 14 days, you may only get a partial refund.

If you’re interested in customizing a website through coding, you may want to utilize the Creator Editor. If you want more control and creativity with web design, Jimdo Creator may be the best fit for you.

For more information on plans, check out the latest prices on what they have to provide for you.

Is Jimdo worth it?

Jimdo is a useful website builder that helps small businesses grow their business online. They have some basic features, especially with the design and block elements they offer.

However, the Jimdo Dolphin comes with limitations. For example, there is not a lot of creative freedom or control when building a website. That’s why the Jimdo Creator is a better fit, especially if you know how to code or do web design.

Also, their eCommerce options are nice, but they’re not the most advanced. So if you’re someone looking to build a large eCommerce store, Jimdo may not be the best choice for that.

My thoughts

When I initially tried out Jimdo, I found it easy to use the editor. But there were times I had problems here and there. I was not a fan of the limitations of the customization tools.

I was not impressed with the customer support, as it can take a while to have someone reach back. Maybe phone support is not necessary, but they should have at least a live chat option available (i.e. 24/7 live chat support).

However, they do provide helpful guides and FAQS if you have any troubleshooting issues. So if you don’t want to wait to hear back from support, you can always look over some of those resources as well.

Jimdo website creator: Jimdo has great FAQS and guides to help anyone with website issues.

Due to the limitations I encountered, I didn’t find a lot of value on the website. Moreover, I would give this website builder a pass and look somewhere else.

Final Words

Jimdo has been around for a long time, which means they’ve continued to provide great services. With both the Jimdo Dolphin and Jimdo Creator, there are options for beginners and advanced web developers.

One of the best parts is they do offer a free plan. So if you don’t have some limitations, it may be worth checking it out to see if you like it.

If you’re on board to choose one of their plans, you have up to 14 days to get a full refund from one of the premium plans. If you’re interested in trying it out, sign up today and see what’s in it for you.

Your Turn: Is Jimdo the best value for your money and time?

I would like to get your thoughts on Jimdo in general. Do you like that Jimdo offers two builders to choose from?

Do you like the ADI editor to help make building a website faster? Or can there be things that can be improved upon?

Are you ok with the limitations? Or do you think the Creator editor may be worth giving a shot if you know how to code?

  1. Looking at all of the “plugs and play” website creators out there, Jimdo does an excellent job at UX for step-by-step actions to get a customizable website up and running, looks pretty cool! I appreciate you going into detail about it.

I could see someone using this to create a simple website, and have something up quickly. Possibly for sharing art, photography, and other projects.

My main concern was whether or not it’d be able to be optimized for search engines and if support wasn’t the best… How come you have that SEO isn’t the greatest on the cons?

Could you elaborate a bit more there? I think it looks easy to use, but I’d wager that there are better options out there.

    Anything else you’d recommend?

Again, thanks for getting into the nitty gritty for this! 👍

    • Hi Colton,

Jimdo is another good website creator to use for any business. I think the UX design is nice and easy to navigate through, which is necessary for a good user experience.

Regarding your questions, I don’t think it’s great for SEO because they don’t have any tutorials or guides on it. If SEO is something you want to take advantage of, there’s not much on how to do it with Jimdo.

There are other website builders where it’s easy to implement SEO. Also, it makes it simpler to use overall.

I have a few recommendations, but I think one that I like more these days is SiteRubix. It’s a free website builder tool to get anyone up and running with a business.

If you’d like to check out SiteRubix, feel free to start a new website today.

Thank you very much for your thoughts and for bringing up those questions. They’re greatly appreciated.

  2. Hey Eric,

Looks very interesting, there are some features that are hard to find when choosing the free themes to add to WordPress. So it’s great to see those options like fade-in and ecommerce available easily here.

The pricing seems pretty good for those beginning and wanted something basic, quick and dirty. Mostly for people who just want to focus on their business, not their site.

Although I do see some limitations here as you also noted. Looks good for those starting, but not for me, thank you for the information was very curious about Jimdo for a while.

    • Hi Victor,

Jimdo has some neat features, especially with the fade-in and e-commerce options. So it makes for a great website builder overall.

It works best for those in business, particularly for using the basics. I think it’s simple to learn and navigate through quickly.

It may have its limitations, so it’s good to point those out. So we’re on agreement with them.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Jimdo website creator- they’re much appreciated.
