Wix Review: Wix Is A Good Website Builder- Yea Or Nay?

Making a website does not have to be difficult, regardless if you have technical skills or not. Today, it’s easier to set up a website quickly in no time. If you run a business and value time (as we discuss on this website), you may want a simple website builder that can save you the frustrations involved. Maybe something such as Wix is a good website builder for you. The purpose of this review is to let you know what I think about what Wix can provide.

What is Wix?

Wix is a software company that provides website design services; for example, drag and drop builders are included in the website builder. Based in Israel, it was founded in 2006 by a few developers that provide HTML5 and mobile websites.

Over the years, it has grown to be one of the most well-known website builders. As of 2021, about more than 200 million users have used the website builder for personal or professional use. Wix has powered at least seven million websites during that time.

Wix users are allowed to do a number of things with the service, such as adding social plug-ins, ecommerce stores, online marketing, contact forms, and add community forums to their websites. The company has a mix of their own developed services, along with providing third-party applications.

It still remains at the top despite great competition from their rivals. For the remainder of this review, I will go over more in-depth about what Wix can provide for your new or existing website.

Build Anything You Want With Wix | Wix.com

How it works

Before we get to the basic setup for a website, Wix provides a few options to help design your website. Here are a few ways to set it up:

  • Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence)

With a focus on making it for you instantly, this option is for those who have little to no skills in website design. When setting up your website, the ADI tool will ask you basic questions on your preferences.

Once you go through that, your website will have content and images built-in. You also have the option to add your own articles and images to help build your online brand.

  • Wix Editor

The editor is the traditional way of building a website. For my sample website, the editor is the one I used to design the website.

Wix is a good website builder: The Wix editor is the traditional approach to designing a website, as you have more control.

With the editor, you have more control over the design and features. It may be a little more work, but it helps if you have specific preferences for building your website.

  • Velo By Wix

This tool is more advanced for those who know how to code and design websites regularly. With advanced computer applications, you can end up making a well-structured website that’s compatible and user-friendly.

  • Hire A Professional

If you’re willing to invest in someone else building a website, you have the option to hire a professional to build your website. Through the Wix marketplace, you can hire a professional to get your website up and running.

Setting up a Wix website

Here’s the basic rundown of getting a website going through Wix.

Adding a page/section

Through the Wix editor, you can add a section (or create multiple ones) to make your page easy to navigate. There are plenty of options to make your pages stand out.

It’s easy to edit or insert images to your pages. Whether you want to make a simple “About Us” page (or the same with a “Contact Us” page), the editor can be a useful tool to add those on there.

Wix is a good website builder: Within Wix, you can make simple pages that help make your website easy to navigate.

Design

Wix has beautiful designs to choose from the ADI tool or editor. It’s especially useful if you want to create an online store full of products. Customization options include colors, fonts, and animations.

Manage

This section is dedicated to editing your website. You can do quite a few things here to make your website stand out.

Wix is a good website builder: The Wix “Manage” section helps make editing your website easier to get up and running.

Some of the things you can do include making menus, creating events, conducting online programs, writing a blog, and input pricing plans. So if you were a restaurant owner creating a menu for your customers to check out, you can do a lot with creating a customized menu that’s easy to look over.

Publish your website

Once you get through the initial setup process, you’re all set to make your website live. One of the nice things about Wix is they provide a lot of tutorials to help you get started.

For example, there’s a lot of videos that walk you through building your website. So if you’re more of a visual learner, you’ll definitely appreciate watching these videos. Additionally, you can read documents like FAQs and troubleshooting tips on their site.

Key Features

There are a lot of features to take advantage of using your Wix account. But for this review, I will go over a few of them that you may want to take advantage of.

  • Contact Management Tool

Through their contact management tool, it’s simple to manage all of your messages in one place. You have the ability to message people through different channels, including email, Facebook, and Wix chat. Wix chat is a great feature that a lot of users make the most out of their website services.

Also, you have the option to automate your messages to customers. That can be useful if you run an online store, especially if customers may ask generic questions about your products or services.

Wix is a good website builder: With Wix, you can communicate all of your messages in one place (with your customers).
  • Free Hosting

As part of having a premium account, Wix provides free web hosting to keep your website safe and secure.

  • Marketing & Social Tools

Wix has extensive resources to assist with promoting your website. If you have an online store, promoting your products through Facebook and Instagram can be helpful. Also, Wix provides some SEO guides and ways to get your website found through Google Search.

  • Analytics

The analytics dashboard keeps track of your website’s performance and stats. Also, you can see which pages your visitors are going to or spending most of their time. The analytics dashboard is included only in the premium plans.

Can Wix help make your business more efficient?

Wix is a useful website builder, especially for those who have little to no experience in coding or website design. With their simple drag and drop tool, creating a website is not that hard.

So if you value time while running a business, Wix has a lot of built-in tools to help make your website functional. Whether you need help with templates or marketing your website effectively, Wix has the resources you need.

Who is Wix designed for? Can it help grow your business?

Wix is primarily designed for online stores. So if you’re in the ecommerce space, Wix can be a great choice in building an online store for your business.

If you’re a restaurant owner, you can easily create menus through a Wix website. When I tested out my sample website, making a sample menu was basic and straightforward.

Wix is a good website builder: Making a menu through Wix is good for those who are restaurant owners.

Also, if you own any other brick and mortar store, you can have an online store available to offer your products. If you’re used to selling in-person (locally), having an online store can help grow your business outside of where you live.

As mentioned before, Wix provides a lot of resources (likely more than you need) to get your website off to a great start. They also have a lot of integrations and third-party apps to help you save time.

Some of the other resources they provide include:

  • SEO Tools
  • App Market
  • Facebook & Instagram Ads
  • Promotional videos
  • Financial tools
  • Logo maker
  • Wix Owner App

If you’re not someone who’s into building a website (or not a do-it-yourself person), then hiring an expert might be another option. If you’re willing to invest more money into delegating that work to someone else, it will be worth it. So you have that option if it’s necessary.

Pricing

Before laying out the prices for their plans, Wix offers a free plan for those getting started with building a website. It can be a great way to see whether you like it or not, or do not want to upgrade to get other features.

However, you will have limited access with a free plan. With a free website, you’ll get the basic functions along with having Wix ads displayed on your pages. That can be a little annoying if you stick with a free plan.

With their premium plans for building a website, you get multiple templates, unlimited pages and free hosting. When  you initially sign up for a premium plan, you can get the option to try it out for a 14-day free trial.

For most of their paid plans, they come with a free domain for up to one year. Additionally, Wix will give you vouchers for advertising on Google and Bing (can be up to $300). Keep in mind that if you sign up for a yearly or multi-yearly plan, you will be eligible for a free domain and the vouchers.

Unlimited- For Entrepreneurs & Freelancers$18/month

Wix provides business and ecommerce plans for businesses looking to accept online payments from their customers. Here are the following plans:

PlanMonthly Plan
Business Basic- For accepting online payments$23/month
Business Unlimited- For growing your business$27/month
Business VIP- For getting the full suite$49/month
Prices Accurate As Of March 2022

Additionally, Wix offers an enterprise plan that’s designed for larger businesses. The enterprise version is priced at $500/month for businesses that need more resources or have complex needs. For more information, you can schedule a call to discuss more details about signing up for this plan.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Free plan for using the website builder
  • Simple drag and drop builder
  • Plenty of beautiful website templates (along with multiple customization)
  • Best choice for online stores or restaurants (i.e. menu displays online)
  • Great marketing tools to promote your online business

Cons

  • A little bit of a learning curve for beginners
  • Free plan comes with Wix ads and limited functions
  • Storage limits for all plans
  • Unable to change templates once the website is published
  • Some up-sells- many of the features require you to upgrade to a premium plan

Is Wix Worth It?

Rating: 3/5

Wix is not a bad website builder to use. As mentioned earlier, there are plenty of resources to get your website up and running.

However, it can be a little tricky to navigate sometimes. For my sample website, I felt a little lost and overwhelmed while putting it together.

With all the options they had available, it felt too much to look into as a beginner. Not to mention, a lot of their options require you to upgrade to a premium plan.

Wix is a good website builder: This article is a review of Wix, one of the most well-known website builders and places for accepting online payments.

So if you’re someone who simply wants the free plan, it may feel frustrating to see that. There are a lot of upsells if most of their features require you to upgrade.

Overall, Wix looks simple to get started. But after trying it out, I was unimpressed with the user interface and limited functions.

If for some reason you’re not convinced with how Wix is laid out, there are other alternatives for website builders. Here’s my recommendation if you want something simpler to use.

Final Words

Despite its limited functions, Wix is still one of the top website builders to use today. Even if you did not want to upgrade to a premium plan, you still can stick to a free plan. Although just keep in mind you will have limited access to their other options.

However, if you enjoyed what you read early on, Wix can be a great choice for you if you want more than just building a website. Besides their premium plans, you can use their online payment tools through their business or ecommerce plans.

If you’re interested in signing up for one of their plans, you can start today for a 14-day free trial. If you choose a yearly plan, you may get a free custom domain (up to one year) and vouchers for advertising.

So that’s something to keep in mind. Wix can help you build a website and accept payments online, no matter what plan you choose.

Your Turn: Is Wix a solid choice for website builders?

I would like to know your thoughts about Wix in general. Do you think Wix meets the standards for beginners? Is it the best one for building a website?

What do you think about their online payment plans? Do you think it would be valuable in running your business?

  1. It seems Wix has all the areas covered when it comes to building the perfect website for your business. I particularly like the analytics part as I am an avid user on my website.

It’s great to see your engagement levels on various posts within your website. Then you can tailor your content slightly to match what is getting all the clicks and impressions.

    • Hi Michael,

Wix covers all of the basic features for building a website, so that’s important for someone wanting a simple website. The analytics portion is very neat, as I was able to easily digest the numbers and understand how that works.

Yes, I think being engaged is important to show you are interacting with your customers. It’s certainly an essential component to not only a website, but for growing a business.

You brought up some great points, so that’s good to keep in mind. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about Wix- they’re greatly appreciated.

  2. I have personally used Wix in the past and at the time it was a quick solution for my business idea. But overtime it lost its developmental value – at least that was my experience.

I only stuck up with the free plan so I had a lot of branding issues back then. Maybe upgrading your plan can make things work and actually function. With the free plan it’s just a limited platform.

    • Hi Stephanie,

I get what you’re saying about how Wix had their golden days in the past. I don’t disagree with you that it’s less valuable now. I think it’s lost a lot of it’s mojo since then.

The free plan is not bad at all. As you pointed out, it’s so limited and you can’t do a lot unless you upgrade to a paid plan.

But some people will opt for the paid plans. Maybe not you and I, since there are other alternatives out there for building a website.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience using Wix. It should help our readers determine whether it’s the right choice for them or not.

      Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.
