Is Life All About Working And Paying Bills? Does It Matter?

Each day, every one of us sails through our lives accordingly. But is life all about working and paying bills?

Sadly, that’s the case for the majority of the world’s population. A lot of people choose to walk around like sheep, hoping that something better will land on their lap.

Most people seek “job security” (if that’s a real thing), where they work to enrich someone else instead of themselves.

Whereas the better alternative would be taking risks and seeking true freedom in life.

It doesn’t have to be that way

I believe life is meant to be fulfilling, where people can do things that make a positive impact around the world.

Life is meant to be abundant and lived to the fullest no matter what. There’s more to life than people may think of it.

In this post, I’ll discuss the thinking that most people go through (when it’s not). Also, I’ll go over my beliefs of what life should be all about.

Is life all about working and paying bills? This post will go over what the meaning of life is, besides working and paying the bills.

Why do we all need to work?

For the most part, work is necessary to pay for living expenses and take care of ourselves. That’s reasonable to understand for the most part.

Most people have been taught to follow the traditional career path to living a great life.

Here’s what they’re taught at a young age:

  • Go to school
  • Get a great job at a well-established company, that comes with great pay and full benefits
  • Continue to move up, get promoted, and make more money at the company you work at (climbing the corporate ladder- or I like to call the rat race)
  • Work for 40+ years until retirement age (i.e. 65 years old)

That’s what we’re taught to believe all the time: Most adults end up being dependent on an employer for steady income, rather than earning income on their own.

They may make a good living as an employee, but they can be stressed out, unhappy, and feel unfilled at the same time.

But most people think that work is necessary- just take it as it is, regardless if you enjoy it or not.

It’s considered to be the societal expectation: You either go down this route or risk disappointing others if you don’t go down this old-thinking path.

Is life all about working and paying bills?

No, not at all-but that happens to be the case for the majority of people around the world.

Many people walk around like sheep- hoping they’ll get by and maybe something better will be handed to them.

Unfortunately, the desired outcome may not come if they don’t take action.

Most people seek job security (i.e. working to enrich someone else- but not themselves), instead of taking risks and seeking true freedom in life.

Is Life All About Working And Paying Bills? There’s More To Life Than You Think!

The traditional career path is not the answer

You can get by fine going down the traditional route; however, you shouldn’t feel pressured by not doing what’s in your best interests.

I don’t believe it’s one where most people feel happy or fulfilled at all. Sure, making lots of money to get by and buy nice stuff can feel good.

But that won’t last long, and that’s not real freedom right there. That’s what I call a trap right there- when you fall into this cycle over and over again.

That’s commonly known as keeping up with the Joneses, but there’s no need for that.

It’s not necessary to impress your family and friends if buying a bigger house or a nicer car fulfills you at all.

Is life all about working and paying bills? Real freedom is being able to do things you want on your own terms.

What do I believe life is all about?

I’m not a firm believer in this normal route to succeeding in life.

Working for someone else is not worth it if you don’t find the work enjoyable.

Working for money is not freedom: It limits your ability to multiply your income even higher. It also affects how you make decisions as well.

For example, when you think about not having enough money to buy a product, the thinking goes, “I can’t afford that.”

That’s having a poor money mindset right there, whether you’re dirt poor or in the middle class making a decent salary.

Why You Should Quit Your Job!

Why do we have to work and pay bills?

Working and paying bills helps to maintain our quality of life. It’s a necessary component to surviving in society.

But if people are wired to think they have to work to just “get by”, they’re setting themselves up for failure and misery.

Oftentimes, people work jobs they find unfulfilling. These jobs don’t allow them to live to their true potential, which leads to living a life of mediocrity.

What real freedom means to me?

I believe life should revolve around working on your own terms. Whether that’s financial freedom or time freedom, that’s something worth pursuing in life.

Freedom is the ability to do the following. You get to do:

  • What you want
  • When you want
  • Wherever you want in the world
  • With whoever you want to work with

On your own terms- It’s that plain and simple.

Is life all about working and paying bills? Being free is not free, as it's something you must earn over time.

What I’m doing right now

As of this writing, I’m currently working full-time for an employer. But at the same time, I’m building a business that will eventually be a steady source of income someday.

In the long run, I want that business not only to generate a passive income that’s consistent over time.

Someday, that’ll give me financial independence and more time to do things I want to do.

There will be a time when I’m confident enough to quit my job and never have to work as an employee.

Read next on “Is It Better To Work For Yourself Than For Someone Else?“, to see whether working for yourself might be the better alternative for long-term financial stability.

I consider that to be on my personal bucket list: To never have to fill out an application for a “JOB” ever again.

I know I’m not where I want to be right now, but what I’m doing outside of my job is what will lead to something better down the road.

I understand that life is more than simply “working and getting by”. I don’t know who wants to live that type of life at all.

There’s so much more to life. You can take advantage of it with the technology and free resources we have at our disposal today.

Freedom is the ability to do the following. You get to what you want, when you want, where you want, with whoever you want, on your own terms. It’s that plain and simple.

What is the point of living to work?

The whole point is to do work that you’re truly passionate about. It’s work that makes you fulfilled and seek purpose in life.

When we do work that fulfills us, that’s what brings the best out of people. It allows them to live their true potential in life.

What can you do about it?

If you’re not happy where you’re at, then I encourage you to reevaluate what you want in life.

You don’t have to go down the traditional path, such as running the rat race or trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Do something where your passion sparks, and where you can make the most impact around the world.

That can be starting a new hobby, learning a new skill, traveling, or starting your own business.

Whichever route you choose, make sure it;’s something worth living your life to the fullest.

Books recommendations on this topic

There are two books I encourage you to read about on this topic. They are as follows:

  • Man’s Search For Meaning (Victor Frankl)

This book is written by a Holocaust survivor, who writes about his experiences living in Nazi concentration camps. It’s a remarkable book on what the meaning of life is, especially coming from a person who saw people die during that terrible time period.

  • The Top Five Regrets Of The Dying (Bonnie Ware)

This book is written by an individual who worked in hospice care. It’s a great read on some of the biggest regrets that were brought up by people right before they died.

Questions to ask yourself

  • What are your values? What is important to you in life?
  • What are your skills and interests? What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing?
  • What kind of lifestyle do you want to live? How much money do you need to make to be comfortable?
  • What are your goals? What do you want to achieve in life?

Final Words

Life is not about working and paying the bills. It’s certainly not just working and being in survival mode.

Unfortunately, most people go about their lives thinking that’s the case. To them, that’s the only best option since that’s what they were taught from an early age.

Luckily, that can change if you take action today. Think of life differently where you can do things that matter the most to you.

It’s not too late to live life to the fullest and thrive. As Rob Dial said in the video earlier,

“You weren’t born to just pay the bills and die. You were born to thrive.”

Your Turn: Is life feel like being in survival mode all the time?

I would like to get your thoughts on this topic. Do you feel that life is always in survival mode?

Is there anything you can change about the current circumstances you’re in? Maybe start your own business that will give you the freedom you desire.

What are some things you may need to give up to live the life you ultimately want?

Are you willing to do what’s necessary to get to that ultimate point of success?
