Do You Need To Be An Expert? No- Learn To Become One

I find myself puzzled when people tell others they’re not an expert in a specific area. So the question I want to throw out is, do you need to be an expert?

The short answer is no. The reason for that is you can learn how to become one, especially if you have a lot of information online these days.

Even if you have no formal education or a degree in a certain area, you could still become an expert over time.

That’s as simple as it sounds, and I’ll dive into this post further.

Do you need to be an expert? This post will go over whether you formally need to be an expert in a subject matter.

Do you need to be an expert?

In the information age, you don’t need formal education or a degree to be an expert. Some people think that you need to be certified to be an expert in a specific area of expertise.

But if you have a genuine interest and you’re willing to learn about a subject matter, you can easily become an expert in a short period of time.

Through research and providing helpful content (i.e. value) to others, you can easily become an expert in the eyes of others.

Do You Need To Be An Expert? No- You Can Become One

What should I become an expert in?

That question can throw off a lot of people, especially if they don’t know what they want to do in their life.

But really, I believe you can be an expert in any area of expertise if you abide by three things:

  • You have a genuine interest or desire in the subject
  • You have the willingness to learn about this specific subject
  • You’re able to teach it to other people wanting to learn more about it

If you can follow these three things, you could become an expert in any area- in a short period of time.

In the age of the Internet, you have the ability to do research and educate yourself on any topic.

Although not all information is equal, you could find a lot of great research on a subject that interests you a lot.

Example: Hiking

Let’s practice these three steps by going over the topic of hiking.

You may be someone who is not a regular hiker yourself, especially if you don’t live in an area where hiking is not possible.

However, you may have been someone who has traveled before and hiked at a few places.

So you can leverage that basic knowledge based on your own experience.

Now let’s expand on the topic and do some research on the internet.

Do you need to be an expert? You can very little knowledge on hiking, but still do a lot of research regarding hiking.

While doing your research on hiking, you can create content on the following topics.

  • What are the health benefits of hiking?
  • How do I stay hydrated while going on a hiking trip?
  • What should I pack before going on a hiking adventure?
  • What are some common hiking mistakes I don’t want to make?
  • What are the best hiking trails to visit in the United States?

If you were to start your own blog or YouTube channel, these are excellent topics to write about for those new to hiking.

With some research and getting other perspectives on the topic, you can usually become an expert and hike in a matter of weeks or months.

Is it okay to not be the expert?

If you want to learn a topic that interests you, there’s no need to have prior knowledge. It’s okay to not be an expert as long as you’re willing to learn and teach yourself about it. If you’re not an expert yet, start working on it today.

You can teach others once you understand the topic well enough

Even in the long run, being deeply informed about this topic can help you be a teacher on it as well.

So if you can get this topic down, you can easily teach it to others who are interested and want to learn more. When it comes to hiking, this is a subject that anyone can learn about.

If you’re someone who is really interested in the subject, you can easily become an expert when you write high-quality content that’s helpful to your readers.

Not necessary to be formally trained

There’s no need to be a “born” expert. I believe that we are not born to be an expert in a subject matter.

It’s something that we can learn to become over time if we use the right tools and resources.

So there should be no excuse when it comes to being an expert on the subject matter.

These days, it’s easier to become an expert with access to information online.

If you can learn how to do it properly, you can be someone who people can look up to as an expert in any topic that you want to learn about.

There are some exceptions

There are a few professions where having formal training or certification is required.

For instance, being a doctor or nurse will require having formal education before going out to practice in those fields.

If you’re going to write a blog on medical topics (but you don’t have a medical degree), you may have a difficult time building trust with your readers.

Readers are more likely to trust doctors who work at the Mayo Clinic or Loyola Medical Center than if you were to write content through an individual blog.

So when it comes to medicine or health care, those are not areas where you can easily deem yourself an expert.

At what point do you become an expert?

There’s a saying that it takes 10,000 hours to master or hone a skill; however, you can become an expert in a short period of time.

By taking the time to learn, doing proper research, and understanding the topics in general, you can become an expert in a matter of months (or in a few years).

Final Words

Becoming an expert in a subject matter no longer requires formal education. Sure, they might add a little more credibility by adding that title next to your name.

However, I’m finding that it’s becoming less relevant as the world continues to change with the technological advances we’re experiencing today.
