ProWritingAid Review: Is ProWritingAid Good For Writers?

Writing is an essential skill to master in life; however, you can make mistakes if they are not looked at closely. Your writing can be confusing to read, with simple typos being made. Whether personal or professional, it’s critical to write clearly and concisely. There are great writing tools to assist you, and one of them is ProWritingAid. But is ProWritingAid good for all writers? That’s what I’ll be discussing as part of this ProwritingAid review.

What is ProWritingAid?

ProWritingAid (PWA) is a writing tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help users improve their writing. The writing assistant offers suggestions for users to make improvements, which are extensive sometimes.

Going back to 2012 in the UK, PWA became a tool for professional authors to get their work published. Previously, writers were not getting enough feedback on their work. Other times, they were not receiving proper training to write better.

In the following years, the tool has developed into more than a grammar and spelling checker. It’s expanded to help all types of writers with improving their writing. PWA’s style guides and implementations have made it a great resource for writers.

For the remainder of this post, I will lay out how the tool works, its top features, and review whether it’s worth it or not for writers.

Welcome to ProWritingAid: A Quick Overview

How does ProWritingAid work? A brief rundown

PWA offers a free plan for their users, so that they can make the most of the basic functions.

As I use my free account, it has a nice user interface. Some of the core functions for this writing tool include:

  • Real time suggestions
  • Grammar
  • Style
  • Thesaurus

When I edit my documents, it will offer suggestions (spelling/grammar) for revising wordy sentences. I think it helps make my writing easier to read.

Summary guide

In PWA, they provide a comprehensive overview to make editing and revising easier to break down. These are deep-dive checks where they have a writing style check in place, along with grammar and readability checks.

As you edit your document, you’ll see the guides on the left-hand corner of your account. Also, they’ll give you writing scores as well. For example, green is good, yellow is ok, and red is bad.

Is ProWritingAid good: ProWritingAid has a neat writing check that provides you scores for how well you write.
Writing Style Check

I could be more in depth about the core functions, but these are some of the unique highlights of the tool. When you’re editing any document, you would be amazed to see how much you can do.

Although the writing check provides you feedback to look over, it’s limited up to 500 words with a free account. Moreover, you would have to request a trial or upgrade to one of the paid plans for unlimited words (the plans will be discussed later).

Top features

There are a lot of great features using the PWA tool, but I’m going to break down the top ones for writers to consider.

“Learn as you go” editing

As you write in PWA, suggestions will automatically come up where you can make improvements. It helps you build better writing skills, and even make your writing look more professional as well.

You have a few options to go about this way: the first one is to write directly in the editor. Or you can simply copy and paste, or upload a document into the editor. These can come from using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, or Google Docs.

20 in-depth writing reports

By far, this one is the best feature for using PWA. Having so many writing reports to review, you gain a better understanding of how to improve your writing.

Some of the key parts to edit include the following:

  • Repetitiveness
  • Sentence length variations
  • Passive voice
  • Vagueness (make your words easier to understand)

Find better words

While you’re writing, it helps to find the right words when you’re trying to make a point. In PWA, the word explorer and their thesaurus guide can help you connect with the right words.

For example, I’ve had times where the tool lists out better words to use in my documents.

Instead of writing:

“This plan was great to use for my business.”

I used:

“I thought this plan was brilliant (grand/eminent) to try out for my business.”

The suggested words helped make my sentence stand out more, rather than using something general in the first sentence.

Plagiarism checker

This one can help determine whether your writing is original or not. It’s especially helpful for students writing academic papers.

The downside is you have to purchase checks in bundles (for example, 10 checks or even 1000 checks). If you purchase their premium plus plan, 60 checks are included in this paid plan.

Multiple integrations

The PWA tool integrates with some of the most common platforms, including:

  • Microsoft Word & Outlook
  • Google Docs
  • Open Office
  • Final Draft

Additionally, the tool can be used in browser extensions (i.e. Chrome, Firefox), and other places such as a Gmail account. If you enjoy saving time, these integrations can help improve your writing.

*Make note that some of these features are available for the paid plans only (see pricing section for more information).

Can ProWritingAid help make you an efficient writer?

As mentioned earlier, PWA came into place because of a lack of feedback for professional writers . You could get informal feedback from family and friends.

Or, you can get formal feedback from writing experts (and possibly have to pay as well). But that can take more time and money to look into, and some writers are not willing to go that far.

With the PWA tool, it gives you a ton of feedback (and suggestions) to make your writing look better and clear. With AI continuing to improve (being more complex), it can help improve your writing overall.

Who Is ProWritingAid designed for?

Initially, PWA was meant for authors to help with getting their work published. Overtime, it has developed into an enhanced tool for all types of writers.

Some of the key groups include the following:

  • Bloggers/content writers
  • Business writers (especially when it comes to writing reports, emails, and so forth)
  • Students (it’s very helpful when writing essays, academic papers- the plagiarism tool is relevant here)

One other neat highlight of PWA is it offers various writing styles. In other words, you have the option to use academic writing, creative writing, or business writing.

Is ProWritingAid good: ProWritingAid comes with various writing styles, such as business writing.

You have a lot of choices to choose from depending on what type of writer you are. So the PWA tool is useful for any type of writer.

Can ProWritingAid help you write faster?

For some users, it makes it easier to check their writing. Every writer is different, so it all depends on a writer’s needs. I know for me, I find that using PWA can slow me down sometimes.

When I’m using the tool, a lot of suggestions come up, and that can feel overwhelming sometimes. I know it was a little challenging when I started using PWA and getting a feel for it.

I’ve been using PWA for a while; but still, it feels a little too much (whether you’re at a beginner level or not). Every now and then, I’ll use it to edit some documents, but I’m not a religious user of it.

Pricing

As mentioned earlier, PWA provides a free plan for their users; however, it does have a limit of 500 words with the reports. So it’s a limited tool if you stick with the free version.

The PWA tool offers two plans: Both plans come with a 14-day free trial. So if you’re not satisfied with either plan, it’s a no problem, money-back guarantee.

This plan includes the following:

  • No word count limits

Along with the two plans mentioned above, PWA also offers plans for teams as well. PWA has worked with several well-known companies (i.e. Amazon, Equifax, Grubhub), and these plans work nicely if you manage a team yourself.

Is ProWritingAid worth it?

Rating: 4/5

PWA is an incredible tool to improve your writing (regardless of what type of writer you are). What I like the most is the various writing styles they offer; for example, business writing styles. The number of reports they provide is awesome as well.

Although, the fact that the free version is limited to 500 words is a downside. At that point, you’re then required to upgrade to one of the paid plans.

My Thoughts

Overall, I’m impressed with how the PWA tool works. The one thing that I don’t like is it can be too much at times when I get a lot of suggestions for improvement. So it can be a little overwhelming for beginners.

My suggestion is to use this tool at a minimum. If you don’t need the advanced features, I recommend sticking with the free version or trying out the premium plan.

If you’re looking for an alternative to PWA, here’s another writing tool that may work out for your writing needs.

Final Words

The ProWritingAid tool is very helpful when it comes to being a better writer. There are a lot of reports to make your writing better, and style guides to take advantage of.

The best part is they offer a free version if you want the core functions only. But if you want to use the advanced features, consider giving one of their paid plans a try.

Remember, you get a 14-day free trial when you sign up for a premium or premium plus plan. So if you’re satisfied or think the advanced features are too much, you can always go back to a free plan.

Either way, ProWritingAid can be an excellent tool to help improve your writing. If you want to make your writing more readable for others, this writing tool can be a great help.

  1. I had never heard of ProWriting Aid before, but this looks like it could have a lot of potential for those who need to write, especially for students, bloggers and business people.  I have a blog that I write for and am always looking for ways to improve my writing.

However, I’m not sure if I would want to subscribe to a plan at this time. It is helpful to note the features that the free plan offers, but it’s a shame it’s limited to only 500 words, as I can see a lot of merit to PWA overall.

Thanks for sharing this tool and giving us the head’s up of what’s offered in the free version.

    • Hi Lee,

ProWritingAid (PWA) is a helpful tool for a lot of people, especially for those who write regularly. If you’re someone who wants advanced editing, this writing tool has a lot to offer.

I hear you when it comes to upgrading to the more advanced features. I wish they could raise the limit to 1000-1500 words instead. I think that would be better if someone wants to write a high-quality article.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope PWA can be a great resource to enhance your writing. It can be very helpful when it comes to those suggestions.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts- they’re much appreciated.

  2. Hi Eric,

It is great rundown of the ProWritingAid.

The program helps all kinds of writers to make the document better with regard to grammar, suggesting better words and helping structure of the sentence for better readability.

The world is run by internet and think how much writing is being done and delivered to public in every millisecond. A helping hand or tool to assist these deliverables will save time. It will help improve the quality of the deliveries.

A free version or free trial of ProWritingAid  for 2 weeks of to taste is a great option to check out. I like the incorporated grammatical correction and usage attribute of this tool.

It adds a lot. Although I like natural writing, this one looks tempting to try out in future.

    • Hi Anusuya,

Your rundown of ProWritingAid (PWA) is spot on. You certainly have a great understanding of how the writing tool works.

I agree that it can help any type of writer. If it’s for basic spelling or grammar, or finding synonyms, it provides useful suggestions.

I think it’s worth trying out the free version. For the most part, it’s helpful to make better suggestions while I write.

I’m glad to know you learned a lot about PWA. If there’s anything I can help you out with, don’t hesitate to shoot me an email.

Thank you for sharing your insights- they’re much appreciated.

  3. This review on ProWritingAid is very helpful. As a content creator, it is essential to provide a clear and concise message using words that are easy to understand.

Talking above the audience’s heads or using complex words tend to lose their attention. I am a Mac user, does this product work with ‘Pages’?

    • Hi Canty,

As writers ourselves, we need to communicate our message as simple as possible. When readers review our posts, it should be easy to understand so that they’re not confused later on.

I agree that using complex language can turn off a reader’s attention. For me, that definitely will lose my attention very quickly.

Regarding your question, ProWritingAid does not integrate with “Pages”. I checked using my MacBook, and it looks like that’s not the case.

Although, they do have a Microsoft Word Add-In for Mac users. So if you wanted to download it that way, that is a viable option worth checking out.

I have not used it myself lately. But if you want to look more into it, check out on how to install it on your Mac.

As far as I know, they rolled out this feature about a year and a half ago. I hope that answered your question, especially if you want something easier.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts- I greatly appreciate it.
