Job Security Is A Fallacy: Why No Job Today Is Safe

People who are employed right now believe in the concept of job security. They believe job security is real and something they take for granted; however, I think job security is a fallacy.

It’s a fallacy because when you work for someone else, there’s no guarantee that you’re going to stay with them forever.  Bad decisions can be made which can ultimately lead you to get cut from your job.

In this post, I will explain why your job is not safe. Along with that, I’ll lay out some of the disadvantages of job security and give some examples of them as well.

  1. Why Your Job Is Not Safe
  2. Job Security Is A Fallacy
  3. What Are The Disadvantages Of Job Security?
  4. Questions To Ask Yourself
Job security is a fallacy: This post goes over job security as a complete fallacy.

Why your job is not safe

As an employee, you may be entitled to certain things. The fact that you get steady paychecks and can some benefits (i.e. health insurance, paid time off) can be nice.

But like any business, things can easily turn south overnight.  When bad things happen and decisions have to be made, there’s a possibility that you may be on the chopping block of layoffs to come.

Job Security Is A Fallacy: What Is The Safest Option?

What your employer might tell you

If you’re part of that list then you are in trouble.  When that time comes, your employer will have to admit by saying the following:

“We’ve made some bad choices. Unfortunately, we’re not going to be able to keep you with us any longer. You’re been a great contribution to our company; however, we can’t keep you on.

Therefore, we have no choice but to lay you off. It may not be beneficial for you, but it’s in the best interest of our company.

So all the best to you moving forward. Good luck in your future endeavors.”

Job security is a fallacy

Job security is one of the biggest fallacies we’ve been told is a good thing. It’s something that society has taught people to believe in righteously.

But in reality, that’s not the case.

The truth is working for someone else can be risky. While on the other hand, working for yourself may be the only safe job because you have complete control and autonomy over your life.

Getting A Job Is For Losers

Most recent example

These situations happen often, but the most recent situation happened when COVID-19 took place. During that abrupt recession, many people got laid off and it was a big wake-up call for a lot of them.

There were some numbers mentioned by the Bureau Labor of Statistics. Around the time, about 57% of workers were temporarily laid off during COVID-19 (July 2020).

Whether it was a temporary layoff or permanent, there were a lot of consequences for these people not being able to work.

So this idea of job security of “Oh, my job is safe. I’m not worried and I don’t have to be stressed out.”

No, I believe that is a big lie. What happened in 2020 should be further evidence of that understanding.

Is job security an illusion?

Job security is an illusion because people are wired to be reliant (dependent) on an employer. Not only they’ll get guaranteed income, but the comfort of health insurance and maybe paid time off attracts them.

Having a steady income and some benefits are nice to have. But, when tough choices need to be made, there is the possibility of you losing your job.  You can easily lose everything overnight.

What are the disadvantages of job security?

Job security sounds like the safe thing today. But when you think about it more closely, that’s not the case

Sure, having that guaranteed paycheck and maybe some nice benefits help in the short run. But here’s the thing- it doesn’t do you any good in the long run.

Here are some disadvantages of job security:

  • Not feeling that motivated: When you have the idea of not losing your job, you’re not motivated to push yourself further. Some people may not set goals for themselves or want to put on new challenges.
  • Feeling bored: When the work you do is not challenging, it can feel like the same thing over and over again. Not being challenged enough can lead to constant boredom and not making an impact.
  • Not having control: When working for someone else, it’s not easy when you make the big decisions. Whatever happens in your department is not entirely up to you.

The biggest disadvantage of them all

I believe the biggest one is not having control. When you have control over company decisions, such as with revenue, it puts you in a not-so-good situation.

Especially when it comes to possibly getting laid off, it can take a big toll on your life. If you are solely dependent on your employer then you have bigger problems than you think.

So it’s something to really think about, especially if job security is not true.  Understanding those consequences can help you get ahead- if you end up being in a situation where you have to make tough decisions.

 Questions to ask yourself

  •  Do you take your job for granted these days?
  •  Have you always thought job security was real or has it been somewhat of a myth?
  •  Are you feeling bored or not challenged at your current job?
  •  What can you do now to avoid losing your job- if that does take place?

Final Words

For some time, I believe that job security is not true. It is one of those biggest fallacies in society that people take for granted.

In reality, that’s not true at all. The good news is that the sooner people understand that, the earlier they can start making better decisions for themselves.

What was covered earlier can help you get started on that path. If you end up finding yourself in a not-so-good situation, that can negatively impact not only you but for those who are dependent on you.

So my suggestion is to start thinking about that today. As soon as you start planning, the better decisions you can make if you end up losing your employment status.

Your Turn: Have you always believed that your job was secure and safe?

I would like to get your thoughts on this topic. If you are employed, do you believe your job is safe right now?

Or do you know anyone who recently lost their job? did they buy into the idea of a safe and secure job?

If you don’t believe in job security what can you do now to prevent a bad situation from coming up? Is there anything you can do that you have control over?

  1. That was great!

I laughed out loud over the “Jobs Are For Losers”!  Totally agree.

In fact, I am very proud to say that I am completely unemployable.  Like, REALLY proud!

Back when I was a lot younger. it made me feel bad about myself.  I felt like a misfit.  It took a long time to recover from that depression, but I’m happy to say that I have.

Completely.  I’m GLAD to be a misfit.  Who, in their right mind, would WANT to fit in with all those poor exploited cattle being shunted off to the slaughterhouse?

Ugh! Great article. Keep up the good work!!!  (Pun intended!)

    • Hi Anna,

I’m glad you got a good laugh out of it. The idea of “jobs are for losers” kind of makes sense.

So if you understand what I’m getting through, then we’re definitely on the same page there.

As I mentioned before, I believe it’s all about having the right mindset.

So if you have a poor mindset you’re likely going to remain employed with an employer. But if you’re rich and you want to get wealthy, you’ll understand the importance of wanting to work for yourself.

I’m glad you got a kick out of the article. The idea of job security not being true rings a bell- it’s something that we have to talk about more often.

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts- I greatly appreciate them.
